i have recently discovered that files i saved to disc from old pc running
win98 were encrypted, TopStudio Encrypting Engine is what the files say they
were encrypted using but i think they are now defunct. i have transferred the
disc with these files on to my xp. of course i cant open them, im pretty sure
i know the password but i dont have anything to open them into. can anyone
help or do i have to take the discs somewhere, or are they lost forever? a
big thank you if anyone can help.

there are obscure websites that have saved old and defunct programs
however, you will have to spend a good deal of time drilling down to them
via search engines.

One way to help expedite the process is to
search for another program that is older and defunct but was
popular as well. You can also search using the file
extension of the encrypted files. If they
are blowfish compatible, then the
search will result in blowfish compatible
links......

They may not be lost forever, but it will take some searching to find a
compatible program to decrypt them. If you think you know the password,
write it down now before you forget it, and continue your search.

It does seem that TopStudio used the Blowfish system:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blowfish_(cipher)

So you should be able to find some other utility that can handle your files.
For example,
http://www.sharewareconnection.com/blowfish-2000.htm
http://www.schneier.com/blowfish-products.html

If it was easy to bypass, the encryption wouldn't be worth much at all.
