Old DC remains in AD

I dcpromo down a DC in AD 2000 about 6 months ago. All of the roles were
transferred over to other DC's. It continues to show up in AD as a DC and
sometimes tries to participate in DC activities. It is currently being used
as an Exchange 2000 Server. Does anyone know how to remove the server as a
DC.

As a last resort you can use an ADSI edit to remove any reference to that
former DC.

The server is now showing up in the regular "Computer" OU, however, on the
server itself, File Replication is still trying to take place. So it is
right in AD but not on the server. When I look at the Event Logs, Directory
Service and File Replication are still present on the server. Shouldn't they
go away?

Yep, they should!!! But they don't. And I've looked into getting rid of
them too.

I also assume that you used the /forceremoval switch?? If so, Ntfrs isn't
switched to manual and the SYSVOL and NETLOGON shares are still
there -you'll need to get rid of these.

So, basically, once the Directory is sorted, you've got to clean up the mess
on the member yourself. Just get into services and set ntfrs to manual,
and delete the DS shares (either using shares snap-in or regedit is
easiest).
