OL2003 lost my Newsreader

M

Mike C.

I added the 'News' tool button to my standard toolbar in
Outlook 2003 and was able to access msnews.microsoft.com.
Later, I needed to access the newsgroups available via my
ISP. To do this, I went to my internet connections and
checked the option to use a Proxy server because
previously, the NewsReader could not find the host. After
changing that setting, whenever I clicked the 'News'
toolbar button, it would open a folder. I didn't record
which specific folder... but it was somewhere in the
Windows heirarchy. Not being able to access News any
longer, I decided that I should remove the button and re-
add it. Now, the 'News' toolbar button no longer appears
in the list associated with the 'Go' command. Despite
turning the Proxy setting off, rebooting the machine, and
restarting OL2003, the 'News' option is no longer
available. I would appreciate any help with restoring my
ability to get to the NewsReader.

Regards,

Mike C.

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/outnews switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.

Ok, I'll try that in the morning when I'm back at my
desk. So, in reality, OL2003 is really using OE for the
news reader functions? Interesting. I thought that it
was a little strange when the news reader started in a
new window. I expected it to be integrated into OL2003.
Thanks for the response.

Outlook has always used OE. There are no plans for Outlook to be a news
reader too. It has enough to do.

Russ,

Changing the default news reader back to OE did the
trick. So far, it hasn't presented the default news
reader dialog but when/if it does, I'll respond in the
negative and prevent it from further checking. Thank you
again for your support.

Thanks so much. I had a similar issue. Found this answer via a search of
the newsgroup.

You're most welcome. And thanks for searching the group for the answer
before posting a question. Well played. If everyone did that it would keep
down the number of traffic jams that occur in this group.
