OL2000/MAPISP32 issue

This one has me baffled. I think it might have to do with the AVG
antivirus software I recently installed, with which I am generally
perfectly happy. But it could be something else.

Outlook 2000 is set up to automatically check mail on my ISP's POP3
server every x minutes. It is also set up to pass outgoing message to
the SMTP server as soon as they are completed.

This works fine most of the time. However, occasionally (a couple of
times a week), I will notice I haven't gotten any mail at all for a few
hours, so I manually check mail and get a popup asking me to re-enter
the name of the POP3 server. It "can't find" the server. It's not a DNS
issue. (I get the same thing if I enter the POP server's IP address.)
My Internet connectivity is fine. I can check and retrieve my mail via
a browser-based mail client, or by telnetting into the POP3 server.

Everything else about Outlook works fine in this condition. I can
navigate folders, move messages around, use the Calendar and Contacts,
everything. When I close Outlook, the OUTLOOK process is still running,
as is MAPISP32 (the MAPI spooler). When I kill them manually and open
Outlook again, everything is fine and all of my mail from the past
hours comes pouring in.

Any ideas?

What version of windoze are you running? What version of
O2k? I don't think it has anything to do with AVG.....more like MAPI.dll
and MAPI32.dll.

Thanks, Milly. I haven't experienced any of the error messages cited in
this Knowledge Base article, but I just did the search-and-rename for
MAPI32.DLL now.

There is one MAPI32.DLL file in c:\windows\system32 which is IDENTICAL
(I ran an FC) to MAPISTUB.DLL in the same folder. I nevertheless
renamed it to .OLD per the article. There is another, DIFFERENTLY
SIZED, ANCIENTLY (1999) DATED MAPI32.DLL file in c:\program
files\common files\System\Mapi\1033\NT. I renamed that one too.

When I restarted Outlook, I got the following error message:

"Microsoft Outlook - OUTLOOK.EXE - Unable To Locate Component

This application has failed to start because MAPI32.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem. [OK]"

The message was persistent, and re-appeared four or five times each
time I clicked OK.

Interestingly, I also got the following message:

"Microsoft Outlook

"The add-in "C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgxch32.dll" could not be
installed or loaded. This problem may be resolved by using Detect and
Repair on the Help menu. Unable to load
"C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgxch32.dl...". You may be out of
memory, out of system resources, or missing a .dll file."

My guess is that this either means that (a) AVG is causing the problem,
as I initially wondered, or (b) Outlook just couldn't load the plugin
because it couldn't find the MAPI spooler.

Outlook eventually loaded (I assume by using MAPISTUB.DLL), but it
didn't recreate the MAPI32.DLL file in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. So I named
back the MAPI32.OLD file to .DLL and left the ancient one in c:\Program
Files\Common Files... as .OLD. I'll have to wait and see if this
changes anything.

Thanks to all who responded. For those who asked, I'm using Windows
Eggs Pee Media Center Edition (alias: XP Professional, 5.1.2600, SP2.0,
Language 1033) and Outlook 2000 SP3 (9.0.0.6627).
