offline synchronization & user lockouts

Howdy-

It seems that one of the setups we've been trying continues to cause
unnecessary user account lockouts (WinNT domain) on XP laptops (not in
domain) when they map a network drive & set it up for off-line use with
the Synchronization Manager.

- user logs in with local machine account
- maps network drive to Windows home directory (authenticates with
Domain\user credentials) & reconnect at login
- sets drive to use offline & performs full sync, does work
- logs off (sync happens)
- disconnects from network, logs in, does work, logs off
- reconnects, logs in again
- goes to sync data, authenticates - fails authentication

- user account gets locked... (ID 644 on PDC), though user account
looks like NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON

Is there something wrong about this setup?

Is it helpful to join the laptop to the domain?

What might be causing this? Cached username on the laptop?

TIA,
BM

the locking actually takes place before the user even enters the network
credentials (step above)...

Just wondering - are there any other newsgroups in which this question
might be better answered? Not being impatient - just trying to be
efficient..

TIA,
