offline files disappear

Howdy -

Wise folks of the ether, my problem is this:

Intermittently, files created while offline seem to
vanish.

My entire My Documents folder natively resides on a file
server, but is synchronized so all contents are available
when I work remotely. The machine is part of a domain.

While working remotely, sometimes, after I create new
files/folders they are no longer available after
restarting machine (Dell Latitude C610, XP professional,
all latest manufacturer OS updates and Microsoft OS
patches/updates installed). I can no longer see them in
My Documents.

However, when I View Offline Files, I can see the newly
created file names and locations. Cannot open them,
cannot copy them (when try to copy, get "Cannot copy file:
cannot read from the source file or disk.")

When I return to the office, and synchronize with the
server, files reappear -- so far (this has happened 2 or 3
times previously).

The last time this happened, while logged in as an
administrator and working remotely, just before this
problem surfaced, got another error when trying to open
any folder within My Documents saying that I didn't have
privileges to open folder.

Also, and perhaps unrelatedly, it seems that since this
problem surfaced, there's a significant lag between trying
to open a synchronized folder and when it actually opens.

Thanks in advance,
Alan Septoff

My usual, off-topic reply to offline files/briefcase problem posts is to
suggest a third party app instead. I've had waaaay too many problems
(including what you've described) to ever feel confident in it. See
www.centered.com - SecondCopy 2000 is great. I have had not a single problem
from syncing using it....and no, I don't work for that company. :)
