Offline files - access denied when online!

Peer-to-Peer network - laptop to desktop, both running XP SP2 and fully
patched, Windows firewall on both.
I have pointed the "My Documents" folder on the laptop to the "My Documents"
folder on the desktop, which is shared, and all the documents and folders
inside are marked as available for off-line use. Suddenly, this morning, I
can't create either a new folder or new document on the laptop, through "My
Documents" whether on or off-line. I get "Access denied".
Yet, If I access the "My Documents" folder on the desktop through My Network
Places, I have full access!
Can anyone suggest why this should have suddenly happened, and what can I do
to rectify this?

Thanks very much but I've been through all that - as I said, if I access the
My Documents folder through the network (NOT via the "My Documents icon) I
have full access.

In fact if I disable off-line files and just point the My Documents Folder
to the networked My Documents on the desktop machine I STILL get "Access
Denied" when trying to create a new folder or file. If I access the
Desktop's folder through My Network Places I CAN create folders and files so
there's no permissions or owning issue here.. There would appear to be some
corruption with the "My Documents" icon on the laptop....how do I fix that?
