Do you mean is Office XP compatible with Vista?

Or are you asking if Office 07 and Office XP are compatible? If that's what
you're asking, I know that 07 has a new file format that's more advanced
than the Word .doc formats. But you always have the option to save things in
the .doc format so they'll still be readable in XP and other pre-07
versions of office.
I believe it's also possible to download something from MS so that you can
read the Office 07 documents in Office XP and other pre-07 versions of
Office.
The new Office O7 format is .docx .

You think it would be alright to leave the 07 trial version installed, in
case they ever decide to buy it?

When I first got Vista, I did that and installed Office 2003 over it.
Whenever I opened an Office 2003 program, I got an error message saying
something like, "wrong version," but then the program would open. Outlook,
however, would not work correctly. I had to do a system restore for an
unrelated reason. This time, I deleted all of Office 2007 (it's scattered
all over the place), and THEN installed Office 2003. Everything works
perfectly now. I can't think of any reason to leave it installed.

Yes, Office XP works on Windows Vista. I'm using it right now and it works
flawlessly.

The one problem you might have in that combination (with the 97 trial
version) is with Outlook XP..

All versions of Office back to Office 2000 are compatible with Vista. There
may be an odd resolvable glitch here or there with the old versions e.g. I
think one needs to apply the Office service packs to Office 2000 before it
works right with Vista.
