I have been using Office Pro 97 for several years. I
upgraded my operating system to Windows XP two years
ago. I use Word and Excel to some extent, but the main
program I use in Office is Outlook. Can I upgrade to the
most recent Outlook software and not have any negative
affect on the rest of the Office package?

Yes you can but you won't be able to use Word as e-mail editor though as
Word and Outlook must be the same version for this.
