When I start my office outlook 2003 program, it will come up on my screen and
then immediatly shut down.
This does not always happen, every few days or so. When I restart my
computer the problem no longer exits.
I think this is a virus problem, but I am not sure. I havee just recently
purchased a new dell laptop and I am pretty new to using outlook.
Please inform me of what I need to do for this.

What do your event logs tell you?
Re virus problem - what antivirus software are you running - is it kept
updated automatically? Have you run a full scan? You might wish to disable
mail scanning - it often causes problems, and as long as the AV program is
running in the background you should be OK.
Try starting Outlook with the /safe switch once from the start | run line,
to keep any addins from loading:

start | run
browse
Navigate to the full path of Outlook.exe and select/open it
back in the Run box, add /safe outside the last double quote (with a space
before the / )
This will help isolate the problem to an addin.

I did not have my event logs turned on, I do now but I am unableto tell you
what they say.
I am only funning AVG the free version, it does update automatically, and I
have runa full scan, but it did not pull anything up. I will try turning off
the mail scanning. I am not familiar with the AV program, what is it?
Ok I followed your instructions on opening up outlook, was there something
special I was looking for or was that just to open it up?

What OS are you on? I was referring to the event logs in Windows NT-based
operating systems (NT, 2k, XP). They're on by default.

Did it work fine without any addins? If so, you need to try figuring out
which add-in isn't working. Try disabling the AVG mail scanning in the AVG
console. Look in tools | options | other | advanced in Outlook to find
others you can uncheck.

It did work in the safe mode, with the avg shut off.

i amnot sure where to look for the event logs, I am still a newby at this.

I am running xp home

Is AVG's mail scanning the only addin you see in tools | options | other |
advanced | addins / COM add-ins?
Try to disable the AVG mail acanning in AVG itself.

Start | run
Type
eventvwr
Press enter

(that's one way).

How is it that i find the event logs for windows? Sorry to bug you with all
this but you are being a huge help to me.

I think I was able to find the add in that was causing the problem. I took
off microsoft mappoint and that seems to have stopped the problem for now at
least. If it becomes a problem again i will be back. Thank you for all of
your help.

This is what the event logs said under load performance. I think this is
what you are looking for.

The MOF file created for the Outlook service could not be loaded. The error
code returned by the MOF Compiler is contained in the Record Data. Before the
performance counters of this service can be collected by WMI the MOF file
will need to be loaded manually. Contact the vendor of this service for
additional information.

You're welcome - glad you were able to find the culprit.

Hmmm - no, doesn't ring any bells for me. You might look at www.eventid.net
if you're curious.
