Version of Outlook?
Type of mail account?
What setting is your automatic send/receive interval set to?

Outlook 2007 (12.0.6212.100) SP1 MSO (12.0.6213.1000)
POP/SMTP
5 minutes
when i send and receive it performs the task continuously - at a fast rate!

Try setting it to a longer interval like 10 minutes. If you have more than
one account configured you should set it even longer.
Also, if you have a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook, disable this
integration and try again.

tried these but no luck.
i forgot to tell you when i open outlook it says "A data file did not close
down properly the last itme it was used and is being checked for problems.
Performance might be affected while the check is in progress"
this happens everytime.
i will try and disable the whole of the anti virus software next (Norton).
i have being using Norton before with no problems.

In that case use scanpst.exe to scan your pst-file for errors.
Also make sure you close Outlook and that the outlook.exe process actually
quits before shutting down your computer.

Alexb, I am having all of these same symptoms. The flashing icon, the
error messages, the continous "send/receive" message that will say
"750 out of 1000 tasks completed" and won't stop until I shut down
outlook. Also, it won't send certain messages and they remain in my
outbox. Can't figure it out
