Outlook Folder Synchronizing

My Outlook will not send and receive at all but I note the icon on toolbar
advising that MS Office Outlook is synchronizing folders - an icon that won't
go away - and must be why it will only prepare to send and receive but not do.
Can anyone help me with a way to stop Outlook synchronizing so I can get
some work done ?
Many thanks

Synchronizing means that a send/receive is in progress.
What version of Outlook and account type are you using?
Does Send/Receive report any errors?

Hi,
I am using 2003 (11.8118.8132) SP2.
The problem starts when I open Outlook - at which point the little icon
appears to let me know that Outlook is synchronizing folders - and that icon
never goes away.
This means that Outlook itself won't process any send/receive request but
doersn't tell me there is a problem.
I am guessing that the synchronization process has gone wrong and is locking
out any real use of Outlook - but don't know how I can stop it either running
or starting up when I open Outlook.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
