Office Outlook 2007 PAINFULLY SLOW!

There are MANY people who have complained that Outlook 2007 is disgracefully
slow, yet I have not seen any resolution or fixes/patches at all. How
pathetic of Microsoft to say the least.

My pst file is 424MB and I do NOT use desktop search add-on (which also
slows down Outlook beyond human comprehension).

I've had this problem BEFORE & AFTER doing an O/S reload of Vista RTM
(official release MSDN). My drive is defragmented weekly and my system is
fast as can get for a laptop:

Specs:

Sony Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz (laptop)
2GB Memory
Vista Ultimate
Office 2007 Ultimate

I would like to know of a fix for this nonsense.

Aloha Chad,

"Slow" is a symptom (and a subjective one at that) not a problem so it's
a little hard to talk about specific fixes. My Outlook 2007 performs pretty
well on my 2Ghz Acer Tablet with 2GB of RAM on WinXP Tablet Edition.

What is Outlook 2007 slow doing for you? Rendering messages? Responding
to toolbar clicks? Printing? What?

How many e-mail accounts do you have and of what kind? How many, if any,
RSS feeds are you subscribed to? What, if any, add-ins do you have installed?
How many other applications are you running? Do you have performance issues
with any other apps or just Outlook? What anti-virus software are you using?


What happens if you, as a test, create a new Outlook profile and use that
instead?

What happens if you, as a test, create a new Outlook profile with a new PST
file and use that?

No addins (aside avg antivirus, even avast antivirus was once installed,

I did not "test" a new profile or pst file, why? Because I need the files I
have now, no options there.

Outlook 2003 never had this problem at all. Search technet forums and here,
newsgroups - you'll see many complaining of outlook 2007's behavior.

Judging from MS's past behavior, I would not expect to see any fix until
Service Pack 1. As there has been no announcement at all about SP1, who
knows when it will happen?
Also, no one knows if MS will even fix it in SP1...

POP3? IMAP? Other? How many on the same server?

As a test you might try breaking the e-mail accounts into separate send/receive
groups, and run them manually/individually, to see if the slowness is tied
to any one or more of the e-mail accounts.

Which version of AVG? If you temporarily stop AVG (as a test) does it affect
the performance at all?

I did not "test" a new profile or pst file, why? Because I need the
files I have now, no options there.

You can keep them, I'm suggesting create an additional profile (with the
same PST file and e-mail accounts) to see if it is still slow. If so, try
a new profile with a new PST file and see if that's slow too.

The point is not for you to use those additional profile(s) as your primary
Outlook profiles but rather to try and determine if the slowness you're seeing
is related to your profile or perhaps your PST files.

Outlook 2003 never had this problem at all. Search technet forums and
here, newsgroups - you'll see many complaining of outlook 2007's
behavior.

Not many people come to the newsgroups to say "I LOVE this product, it works
great, how much do I owe you?!" Just about everybody here has a complaint
of some kind. What I'm trying to determine is what the cause of your particular
problem is. Because if we don't figure out the cause we can't figure out
a solution.

Complaining about Microsoft not fixing an undefined problem is like calling
your doctor and complaining that he didn't cure you when all you said was
"I don't feel good."
