Office Networking weird problem

Guest

I will tell you my networking setup in my office in detail, and I hope one of
you guys knows what's wrong with it.

There are 7 computers in total in my office. One laptop and 6 desktops. 1 of
the desktops is newly added and there is a problem with it. The orginal 5
desktops are able to share the files, but not the new desktop. I set the same
workgroup as the other 5 desktops and connected it with a router. ALL
desktops are able to share the internet. Just the new desktop can't share the
other 5 desktops' files and folders. Of course no other computer can access
the new desktop as well. Window's internal Firewall is disabled for all
computers.

I am using a 8-ports linksys router, RV082 (for dual-wan) gateway:
(192.168.1.1)
Port 1 = go to another linksys wireless router, to share the internet for
the laptop gateway: (192.168.2.1) Laptop (192.168.1.106)
Port 2 = Computer A (192.168.1.101) winxp home sp2
Port 3 = Computer B (192.168.1.102) winxp home sp2
Port 4 = Computer C (192.168.1.103) winxp home sp2
Port 5 = new computer (192.168.1.100) winxp pro sp2
Port 6 = Idle
Port 7 = Computer E (192.168.1.104) winxp pro sp2
Port 8 = Computer F (192.168.1.105) winxp pro sp2

Anyone can help? or I should simply go reinstall the new computer and it
will help?

Des,

When you say, "can't share" and "no other computer can access", what specific
error message or observation are you seeing? Details matter here.

On the face of it, you have a browser conflict.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html

But browser conflicts generally are caused by other factors. One of the most
common would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other
security component like an anti virus package. There are several other
possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem. Read this article
with an open mind.

For more direct help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from the
problem computer, and from 2 other computers, so we can diagnose the problem.
Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely

Des, before you go too far in troubleshooting, I'd verify that you can ping
from the new machine to the old ones, and vice-versa. My guess is something
very basic is preventing any kind of communication between machines.

Ok... my new computer ping computer A.. host name = failed, ip = ok
computer A ping computer B.. host name = ok, ip = ok
computer A ping my new computer.. host name = failed, ip = ok
I am 100% sure that they are ALL in the same workgroup.

what I mean "can't share", and "no other computer can access" is...
network neightbourhood --> browse workgroup's computer --> Prompt with error
message
Unable to access Workgroup. You may not have the permission/right to access.
Please contact the administrator in the server, ...... (sorry about that my
computer is installed in chinese, so I tried my best to translate it)

about personal firewall, yes. I do have norton internet security and norton
anti-virus. I turned both of them off but it is still not working. :/

Des,

OK, if you'll read some of the other threads in here, you'll notice a few folks
like you have discovered (sometimes after wasting a lot of time) that disabling
NAV / NIS is not a useful process.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html

OTOH, "browstat status" may tell us more. But nothing in "ipconfig /all" hits
me in the eye.

But you do need to read some of the articles. It is a good use of your time and
mine.

I noticed you have your router as your DNS server. Does it serve this
function?
This may be as simple as updating the etc\hosts file on all the machines.
Go to one of the older machines and got to windows\system32\drivers\etc\ and
open the hosts file with notepad. If you have that file populated with the
names and IP addresses of the computers then that is your problem. Add the
new computer name and IP. Then make sure all the computers on the network
have the up to date hosts file (don't save with a .txt extension), including
the new computer.

Thanks.. it works partly right now.
After I changed the "host" file as follow, I can see 5 computers in total..
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.100 AARON
192.168.1.101 conference5
192.168.1.102 Conference3
192.168.1.103 Conference2
192.168.1.104 Conference1
192.168.1.105 Conference4
192.168.1.107 PrimeNB1

But I am supposed to see 7 computers in total, isn't it? And 7 computers are
turned all at the same time. Now, I can see AARON, conference 1,2,4,5 in my
neightbourhood in my workgroup.
Still got some problems in my computer I think? I am glad that you can help
me about this
