Office files on network storage locked for editing

I don't know if this is an operating system problem, Office 2007 problem, or
combination. But previously I had WinXP using Office 2003 and could open
documents on my Buffalo NAS without any problems. Computer with Vista and
Office 2007 could not, kept getting a message that files were already open by
"another user" and could only open files in read-only mode.

I then upgraded BOTH computers to Windows 7 with Office 2007, and they both
have the same problem. All other files types open and edit, using different
programs, without any issues. Any ideas here? I've googled this and it
seems like it is a fairly common problem but I haven't found any answers.

I found my own solution. I had posted the same quetion on the Buffalo user
forums, and someone replied that a firmware update was supposed to fix the
issue. Applied the update and all is well. From the firmware notes, it is
an OS issue, beginning with Vista and it looks like continuing with Windows 7.

I suspect it is a filing system permissions error that is not allowing the
temporary files created in the working folder to be deleted and or created,
so essentially it seems to be a networking issue. Can you save new Word docs
to the NAS? When you close the document is the lock file retained? - See
