office 2004 for Mac/ problem opening files

When I go to open a Word Document, the following error comes up
"Blahblah.doc is being used by another user. Do you want to make a copy?" I
click OK and then it says "Word cannot open this document. The document might
be in use or might not be a valid Word document."

I've been using Office 2004 on my computer for the last 3 years and this
just came up. Does anyone have any ideas?I would hate to lose all my files.
