After years of Office 2002 I found that the install disks wouldn't
work when I did a clean install, so I've upgraded to Office 2003. I
find it disconcerting because each time I load Word or Excel (the only
elements that I've installed) part of the screen is taken up by a help
facility. I really, really do not want it but in spite of trawling
through options and customize I can't find any way to turn it off
permanently.

Does anyone know how?

Colin

Do you mean the "task pane"
http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/assistance/HP011127341033.aspx
Use this procedure to prevent the task pane from opening automatically when you start
Microsoft Office Word 2003.

1.. Close all documents and WordMail messages.
2.. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3.. On the View tab, clear the Startup Task Pane check box.
4.. Exit Word.
When you start Word again, the task pane should not appear. If you continue to
experience problems, follow the link in the See Also box, which is visible when you
are connected to the Internet.
