When I attempt to use the save as function in any office 2003 application
such as word or powepoint, the application freezes and the message is "Not
Responding"{. I have 55 GB of free space on the hard drive and 2GB of Ram
so that should not bne an issue. The disk has been defragged and is in great
shape. This just started happening after I updated Win 200 with the latest
upadtes yesterday?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

If you have recently installed Windows updates, the problem could be caused
by one of them. Here's Jay Freedman's advice:

The quick but unsafe way is to uninstall the security patch that's
causing the problem. In Add/Remove Programs, check the box at the top
marked "Show updates". Select "Security Update for Windows XP
(KB908531)" and click the Remove button.

For a better workaround, until a new security patch is ready, read
Steven Hui's post at
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...&q=verclsid+hui&rnum=5&hl=en#a9fb82836c014916.
Use the registry change in Method 1. Also read the replies that follow
that post, which give some useful advice.

Suzane,

That helps w/ the IE 6 problem, I have uninstalled that patch, but that
patch did not affect office 2003 apps did it?

Apparently it did; anything that changes Windows can affect Office.

Suzanne,

Thank yopu so very much for your brillaince, As a Radar Engineer, I was
totaly looking in the wrong direction and was concentarating on Office 2003
instead of the recent updates. I removed KB908531 and all is well,

You are FANTASTIC!!! thanks again. Do you think that MS will release a
renewed KB... to replace the KB 908531 that is the ciulprit of the problem? I
feelvery sorry for the "folks" that do not use forums and will have to spend
$$ to fix an error that MS has sent out as a secuirty fix.

Thanks again.

I believe MS is aware of the problem. Whether they're working over the
weekend to fix it, I don't know, but I hope we'll see a patched patch soon.

Hi Lewis,
This issue has been seen to occur in systems where KB 908531
was installed and certain HP software is installed. You can call MS support
at 800-936-5700 and Office support would be able to send you a registry key
to fix the issue.
