Office 2000 problem after SP2

After installing SP2, noticed that all office documents show generic exe
icons (*.doc would still be opened with Word if I click on it, but icon does
not show that it is a Word document). Tried Tweak UI program suggested in
one of the postings for lost Office Icons, it did not work. Tried to do
"detect and repair", got message: "This patch could not be opened. Verify
that it exists, and that you can access it, or contact the vendor to verify
that this is a valid Windows installer package". Same message when I tried
to change or remove from Control Panel, add/remove programs. I cannot
deinstall Office now, nor I can install it (got the same message, "patch
could not be opened").
Posted similar question a few days ago, Kelly responded that problem is
known and workaround exist, but I could not find any further info on this.
Please help!

Was Office 2000 already installed when you installed SP2?

I would back up and reinstall XP, followed by a clean up, chkdsk and defrag
and then install SP 2. Clean up, chkdsk and defrag again. Then install your
AV and firewall and bring them up-to-date. Then go to Windows Update. Then
install Office. Clean up, chkdsk and defrag again. Then Office Update. Then,
the rest of your programs and finally your devices and I bet you will be a
happier camper. If you start now, you might be done by Monday ;-)

Oh, and I mean a clean install, formatting the HD first, not installing XP
over itself or a repair.

I could do this, by Monday or later next week, but I was hoping for a
"workaround", not installing everything from the formatted HD.
Any other ideas, anybody, please?
