Obnoxiously loud modem sound at signon

Hi, I have an astonishingly loud modem sound emitting from
my megahertz xj1560 modem on my W2K laptop that just won't
go away. I've muted the computer's sound and gone to
modem settings and turned the modem's sound to off but
it's still just as loud and annoying. any ideas? thanks,

Some modems are just noisy even though there's nothing wrong with them. My
last one was a mouse compared to this (newer) one - sounds like a car
crunching through the gears.

In the dialer, go to Settings and configure modem, then
turn off the speaker there. Sometimes applying the
settings in Device Settings doesnt apply them to all parts
of Windows.
