When a Dos based application is run on a XP machine the
task manager show nvtdm 100%,after which no of my
applications like word or excel works.

What is the DOS application doing? If it is mostly waiting for input
from an operator you could change the idle sensitivity in the
properties. I use DOS programs that do a lot of data filtering and
while the responsiveness suffers I can still do other things while it is
working.
