NVTDM KERNEL: missing 16-bit system module

Rick Teitsma

I have had this message crop up before when trying to run
older Win 95/98 software, but it is now popping up
repeatedly since I installed Norton's Internet Security
Suite 2004. It is a box that pops up in the middle of the
screen that says "NVTDM KERNEL: Missing 16-bit system
module. Please re-install the following module to your
system32 directory: SYSTEM.DRV". I of course have one
major problem- I can't find my Windows XP upgrade disk.
Found the original packaging but no disk. Can I possibly
do this is any way without the disk (such as being able to
download the SYSTEM.DRV from Microsoft), or, if I manage
to find it, how do I get just the SYSTEM.DRV off the disk
and into my system32 directory? Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks, Rick

Hi Rick...system.drv is a 4 KB driver needed to run old 16 bit apps.
On my computer it is located in three locations.
Windows/system...windows/system32 and windows/system32/dllscache. If it
is not in windows/system32 then do a search for this driver in the other
locations. If you find it, just copy it and paste it into the other
locations. It is most likely accounted for in the registry so this
SHOULD work. I am no expert. Other replies may be more informative.
It is also possible that some "registry cleaner" program deleted
this driver inadvertently as some of these cleaners are "iffy" at what
they remove.
If you can't find the system.drv I am sure Microsoft has it or I
could upload it to your hotmail address.

Please reply to the group with your progress. My email address is
purposely munged.
