NV4_Disp

I tried to install a slave drive, and that resulted in my master drive (Dell)
to not function properly (on start up, the Dell screen and boot screen would
show, but then the log-in screen never came up).

I've called several Dell tech support ppl regarding this issue, and I've
repaired XP twice and have done the Dell Resource CD once and a diagnostics
test all with no success. It finally dawned on me to start up in safe mode
and remove the password for my account.

Finally, my original Dell drive worked (the slave was disconnected), and I
was able to get to the desktop. I clicked the Start button, and then the
monitor flickered, and a blue screen came up saying something about a
minidump (I think) and the error was caused by NV4_Disp.

I'm back in safe mode, looked at my device manager, and the only thing
marked (with an explanation point) is my SoundMax Digital Audio.

If anyone is able to help or offer suggestions, it will be greatly
appreciated.

Of course I googled this error before coming here! :p I looked at a few of
the links, but I didn't find anything exactly like mine.

I did the Dell Resource CD and installed the GForce drivers again, but when
my computer booted (in normal mode) the resolution was all messed up. I
guess I'll try that one more time.

Again, any other suggestions/help will be apprectiated. And thanks, Kelly!

Wouldn't it have been more logical to reinstall the SoundMax Digital Audio
drivers.

hmmm,

I have a few Dell Dimension 2400C`s and 1 Dimension 4600C
here at work, haven`t encounter your problem. Just use
the Dell driver CD and reinstall the audio driver.

I tried that, but none of the Dell resource CDs worked. Even one of the tech
support ppl wasn't able to help me with that issue!

Weird... when I tried it the first time, it said it couldn't because it
couldn't find it on the CD. Now I get another error:
____________________________________________________________________
Hardware Installation

The software you are installing for this software:
SoundMax Digital Integrated Audio
has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows
XP. (<u>Tell me why this testing is important.</u>)

Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabalize the
correct operaion of your system either immediately or in the future.
Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact
the hardware vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing.

Any suggestions here? (I'm not going to continue as of now.)

I would just go ahead and let the driver install continue. The
unsigned Soundmax have always worked fine.

That's basically what I did after calling another tech support (TS) person
and restarting my computer about one-hundred times attempting to update the
drivers!

It was recommended from TS to download an updated NVIDIA driver from their
site, so if anyone else experiences this problem, go there!

OK, I had the same issue; working with a GeForce 5200...and I dont
know a whole lot about computers...I mean I was deleting dll files,
doing all sorts of crazy things...finally something that works:

Right click the desktop.

Select Properties.

Select the Settings tab.

Select Advanced.

Select the Troubleshoot tab.

Uncheck "Enable write combining".

Now I dont know what this does; someone post and tell me, but it
works...no restarts Battlefield 1942 works solidly again...it's like a
magic spell.
Good luck!

Specifies whether "write combining" is turned on or off. Write combining
improves video performance by speeding up the display of information to your
screen. However, increased speed can cause screen corruption, so if you
experience problems with your display, clear the check box.
