You could probably use 2 sequences saved as AUTOTEXT
entries. For example, press ALT+F and type SEQ NextStep
in the fieled code braces. Right click { SEQ NextStep }
and click update field. Select the numeral 1 then press
ALT+F3. Save the AutoText entry as NextStep (or whatever
you like as long as it is four or more unique letters).

Repeat the above for your transition numbers except add
the TR to the AutoText entry ( i.e., TR{SEQ NextTR } to
TR1 select the TR1 press ALT+F3 and call it NextTR).

I have a table. The rows of the table contain either two
types of data, a step or a transition. I have one colume
that keeps count of the number of steps and
transitions.e.g.
Step/Transition | Function
Number |
-----------------------------------------
1 | Step
Tr1 | TRansition
2 | Step
Tr2 | Transition
3 | Step
Tr3 | Transition
Is there a way I can autmatically keep track of the
number of entries for both the steps and the transitions?
I had tries bullets and numbering but found that it had
problems because there were two different types of entries.

In the second line of Greg's instructions, read "press Ctrl+F9."

Suzanne,

Thanks for the backup. I have had mind numbing week and it is showing more
than usual.

Understood.
