numbering JPGs

Jo-Anne

I have two computers, both running WinXP SP3. On my old one, I've been using
Dell Image Expert to download photos from my Canon camera, which I then copy
to my other computer (as a kind of backup). Each time I download more
photos, Dell continues the numbering of the JPGs, using the format
IMG_111.JPG.

Today, for the first time, I tried downloading photos directly to my new
computer, which doesn't have the Dell program on it. Using Microsoft Office
Picture Manager, I could "name" the images (so presumably I can use the same
system Dell does). However, the images are numbered from the beginning. Is
there a way I can continue the numbering--say, by stating the first number
and then asking for consecutive numbering from that point on? I checked the
Help file but didn't see anything obvious. I'm hoping there's a general rule
for consecutive numbering of photos from a certain point--one that would
work with any of the photo programs.

Thank you!

Hi Jo-Anne,

The numbering of the images is doen within the camera when they are stored
on the disc. You need to check the camera settings and make sure that it is
not set to start renumbering when images have been downloaded, rather it
should use continuous numbering. Not sure what the feature is called as I
don't have my camera to hand, however I used 4 digital cameras, including
Canon, and they all have this functionality. Even if you just connect the
card to a card reader, you should then get the correct names.

It might also be worth installing the Canon Zoombrowser software, which
automates the download process and even works with non-Canon cameras.

I don't think you can control the names during the download process with XP,
however you can rename them afterwards.

Hope this helps,

Why not use the Microsoft Camera & Scanner Wizard?
You may have to stray from the format IMG_111.JPG but if I have pics
in a folder like Alan and they are named Alan 001.jpg...Alan 022.jpg
then the next time I attach my camera and use that folder, the files
start from the next number, i.e. Alan 023.jpg....

I suspect yours are in a folder with a date name, so they would
normally start from scratch.

As Dave said, the continuous numbering is usually handled by the camera (one
exception is a Fuji FinePix S602Z I own). Is it possible for you to install
the Dell Image Expert software on your new computer? That way you'd be using
a program you are already familiar with to download the pictures.

Just a thought,

Thank you, Dave! I don't think that's it, though. Last night, after I
downloaded the photos onto my new computer and they were renumbered from 001
there, I downloaded them again from the camera to my old computer--where the
numbering continued from where it had left off. So it looks like the program
is what's handling the numbering. I probably should install the Canon
software so I can do things the same on both computers. Thank you for the
suggestion!

Thank you, Alan! I do put each download of photos into a separate date
folder, but with Dell Image Expert the numbering continues no matter where I
put the photos. As I mentioned to Dave, when I downloaded the same photos to
my old computer from the camera, the numbering continued as before.

Thank you, Tom! I checked with Dell, and they claim I'd have to buy the
program for my new computer, since it doesn't come with it.

What model Canon camera is it? I have a PowerShot SD700IS, and under Menu,
Tools (looks like a wrench and hammer), there's a setting for File
Numbering. The choices are Auto Reset and Continuous. I have mine set to
Continuous and after I offload my pix, the next picture I take continues the
numbering from the last one I offloaded. Maybe yours is similar?

Thank you, Tom! I think the camera's numbering has nothing to do with the
numbering of the downloaded photos. But you've convinced me that I should
look at the software that came with the camera. I'll bet it allows
continuous numbering--and I could install it on both computers.

Hi Jo-Anne,

I still think that you'll find the camera is capable of controlling the
numbering, it's standard functionality on Canon cameras. From what you've
said, it sounds as though it's set to "Reset" rather than "Continuous" and
if you change it, then you can download to any PC with any piece of
software, or by just connecting the camera as a drive, and you'll get the
continuous numbering that you're wanting.

At the moment, it sounds as though the camera is resetting the numbers and
the Dell software has an option to do continuous numbering, which is useful
but only on the computer with the software installed.

Put us all out of our misery, check the continuous / reset settimng for file
numbering in your camera options and see what it's set to, I'm sute it'll
resolve up your issues.

I just checked the camera, and it is set for continuous numbering.

I am using my fourth Canon camera and each one was/is set for continuos
numbering.
I don't use any "software" to download pics to PC, just slot the card into
a reader and copy/paste the pics.
(On three different PCs with no problems)

Are you saying the numbering is continuous no matter which computer you
download it to? If you download the same pix to each computer, do you get
the same numbers on each one?

Yep, the "numbering" is done by the camera and is the "name" of the jpg.
(Remember, I copy/paste the pics from the camera card, into a folder I
have named "Camera Downloads")

Nice way of doing it! I'll have to see if that method will work for me. I
suspect it'll be harder to get the card out of the camera and into the
computer than just attaching the camera to the computer with a cable. But it
might be worth it to retain the numbers everywhere. Thank you!

As Sunny replied, that was the point I was trying to get across- no matter
where I download my pictures, whether it's my notebook or home PC, the
pictures will always have a different sequential number than anything I've
already saved. Like Sunny, I don't use any software; I just plug in the SD
card on my notebook, or attach the camera with the USB cable to my home PC
and save them all. I do a lot of tennis events, so a lot of pictures are
taken every day. At the end of each day or two, I download the pictures to a
folder with the event name, such as My Documents\My Pictures\Family Circle
Cup 2009. If the last picture I off-loaded was DSCF2460.JPG, the next
picture taken will automatically be DSCF2461.JPG whether there are any
pictures on the camera or not. I have never used any camera software for any
camera I've owned; it just doesn't seem necessary. The pictures are already
pre-numbered, and I don't need to waste time messing with it.

Oops...I clicked Send before writing anything. I apologize! Good to know
that I can download without a program using either the cable or the card. I
guess what I should do is not choose a program to get the photos and instead
use the Copy command. I'll check it out the next time I have photos to
download.

Thank you!
