.JPGs make copies of themselves!

My father-in-law has a computer running XP that does the darndest thing. If
you hold down the CTRL key and click a number of .jpg photos he has on his
Desktop, and then delete the group, within a few seconds copies of these
photos populate the Desktop. Thy keep multiplying like bunnies! Other files
don't do this, only .jpg files. He runs Picassa, which I know nothing about,
otherwise his system is just like mine, which does not do this. Anyone heard
of this?

I've not heard of that one. What I recommend is creating a new folder on
the desktop and then download pictures to it instead of the desktop. Comes
deletion time, delete the folder.

Thanks, Ron;

What I did was to create a new folder under My Pictures and put the
photos there. This is a stable folder, so I figure I can delete all 'copies'
with relative impunity. Nonetheless, copies of the original photos (which
have now been dragged to their own folder) keep popping up. It's a strange
one, all right; but then my dad-in-law got some marginal help from a
self-styled Computer Guru setting up his system in the first place.

Use the delete key on your keyboard instead of your mouse. Also disable all
Norton functions if it is installed.

Did you try holding down the shift key and deleting the copies from the
desktop? This action causes the recycle bin to be bypassed.

Another thing to look at: Open Windows Explorer, tools, folder options and
file types tab. Scroll to .jpg, highlight it and click the advanced button.
Any clues there that might explain the behavior?

For the record, I've noticed a similar behavior if I use a "show the
picture view" but not with a "list" view; the latter is my default.

I have the same problem - when I want to select multiple jpg files I
use ctrl and mouse click for selection and immediately the files are
copied to the same folder like Copy of ... ... ...

File properties does not show anything that can cause this.

This is annoying to some extent as we have to go on deleting the
copies created.

Hope this helps

Are you sure it is not a mechanical problem with the mouse?
I have had a few occasions, where with just a slight movement of my hand has
caused me to copy many files or move them to another location. More likely
to happen when you are in a hurry.

If the mouse is well used, sometimes the button gets worn, and doesn't act
reliably.

The mouse is quite ok and never cause troublle otherwise.

The problem arises only with the jpg files and not with others.
