Cannot view Jpg's

A coworker is running Windows XP Pro on his machine. He has two folders in
his desktop, each containing jpg's.
Both folders are set to show thumbnails. In one folder, all jpgs come up as
expected as thumbnails. In the other folder, only a few of them are
viewable. The rest are icons only. There is nothing unique about the names
of the files and all are valid files which are viewable in graphics editing
software. The question is: why is this happening.

They came from the user's digital camera and also from various websites.
Mostly company related pictures.

In doing some Google searching, I found a possible cause which seemed valid
in this case. I had recently installed a copy of MS Office 97 (Word, Excel,
and PowerPoint only) on that machine. The site suggested a registry hack
which I did, but no joy.

Are all of the problem JPGs from various websites? How were these JPGs
saved to the desktop folders (e.g., via copy/paste)?

Don't know if this has been asked, but are the file extentions the same,
..jpg, or is one lot .jpeg?

Since you say these files appear as icons, it could be simply a case of
associating a program with the jpeg extension, (this tends to be less
common, same as a jpg though.).
