Numbered table problems

I am doing a table where the first column is numbered. I used the number
button and it worked fine. But now the 2 spaces after the number are
underlined and I cannot get rid of the underline. I have tried the underline
button, the borders and shading button with no luck. HELP!
 
If you select the whole paragraph and press Ctrl+SpaceBar (to clear direct
font formatting), does that fix the problem?

By the way, which version of Word are you using?
