Number of Restore Points in Vista vs XP

In XP there were lots of days one could pick from pon a calendar, and in
any given day there could be more than one restore point to choose from.

I have Vista Hoime Premium at the default settings (as far as Restore is
concerned anyway) and I note that there is not only no calendar type display,
but there are only a handful of restore points.

Why? How can I change that to be more like XP?

Hi Wayne,

This generally happens when an update is installed. Otherwise, in XP, only
one point is created on any given day at first boot.

different point", then "show restore points older than 5 days"

You can't, as it works somewhat differently incorporating shadow files of
user data in addition to the system file set.

Now I feel like a moron for having missed that option, although I don't recall
seeing it after I clicked the radio button for choosing a different restore
point.

Funny thing is -- I just went to System Restore to verify this "show restore
points older than 5 days" option and now all my restore points seems to have
been wiped out. Yesterday there were about 6 or so. Now it is saying "No
restore points have been created on your disk ...."

Since that time I have installed Windows Live OneCare on the laptop -- could
this have wiped out my restore points? Don't see why .... I seem to recall
that even as it was being installed, a restore point was created because
of same. Strange.

You're not duel booting to XP are you?
Doing that will wipe out your Vista restore points

Hi Wayne,

It's quite possible that it did, some programs or updates have been known to
do that. The other factor to consider is space limitations, as more is
backed up, fewer points can be held.

No dual boot. I think that it was the installation of Windows Live OneCare.
It now has restore points since that installation.

6 GB total allocated.

I suspect that is for XP. The way to do it in Vista is via the cmd window
(run as Admin) and running a vssadmin command. Just Googled that.

You are correct, I was thinking XP.

What most likely happened was Windows Live OneCare created a restore point
which was large enough that it had to purge older restore points make room.

At an elevated command prompt, paste the following command and press enter.

vssadmin list shadowstorage

Post the results here.
