I have tried repeatedly to return to an increasing number of older restore
points only to be given the message: "System Restore did not comlete
sucessfully . . . . An unspecified error occured during System Restore.
Windows Vista Home Premium Edtion, Internet Expl. 7.06000.16473

How can I solve this???

Did the complete error message get dumped into the Event log? If so what
does it say.

I do not know about 'the Event log' but the whole message said, "System
Restore did not complete successfully . Your computer's system files and
settings were not changed. An unspecified error occured during System
Restore."

This means that your system restore file is corrupted and useless. The only
fix is to turn off sys restore, reboot and turn it back on. Set a new restore
point and start off fresh.

Without the Vista DVD the easiest fix is to install VistaBootPro from
vistabootpro.org (It's written to run on Vista but will also work on
XP.)

You need to 'install the Vista boot manager' using the 'all drives'
option.

Thank you, Mary, I am going to do this now and hope that in future the
system is going to work.

At the same time, implies running one in a Virtual Machine within the
other. Or do you mean having both installed at the same time, and
choosing which to run when you boot? That's designed to work but is
severely damaged because XP's code will eat Vista's System Restore and
Previous Versions (data backups).

It can still be done, but you have to use 3rd-party stuff to hide them
from each other, using non-standard partition table and thus adding an
extra element of risk and potential for data loss. Yuk.

You have to install the older OS first, or do a lot of manual
tap-dancing, because the older OS's installer has no knowledge or
awareness of the newer OS and will destroy its bootability.

Major bummer, not having an OS installation disk. Are you a victim of
some large OEM's "airbox edition"?

If I don't see a disk, I don't see anything worth paying for. Or, to
put it another way, I'll swap you a license to scratch my butt for a
license to use software you have not provided in installable form.
