I have many computers and I have window xp home edition. I know there is
only a few number of installations allowed. Is there a minimum allowed
installations allowed in the professional or media center edition? If so, how
many?

You can do as many installs as you want as long as it's on only a single PC.
(If it's an OEM license it can only be installed don the original PC)
If you want XP on more than one PC, you need to buy 1 license per PC.

"I know there is only a few number of installations allowed"

Depends on your meaning.

If you mean taking a single copy/license of Windows XP and installing it on
a single computer. Coming back at a later time to that same single computer
with that single copy/license of Windows XP and installing it again. Rinse
and repeat....
-- Until you and/or that computer dies.

If it is an OEM license - only the above is true accoriding to the EULA.
If it is a Retail license - then the above is true PLUS if you remove the
single copy/license from that single computer, you can install that single
copy/license on another single computer (any other single computer) as many
times over and over again as you like.

However, in *no* case - in accordance with the EULA - can you install the
same single license/copy on multiple computers at the same time.
