NTVDM problem

A friend of mine is having an NTVDM problem. At work, he's running a DOS app
on XP Pro and it runs just fine. But when he tries to run it at home on his
XP Home laptop, he only gets the DOS window that is titled
NTVDM-774.4d4.310002. All that's in the window is the blinking cursor.
Nothing happens and he has to use the window's close button. This generates
an error of course with the title "End Program - ntvdm-6c4.c20.330002".
He's fairly knowledgeable about computers so it's not a question of him not
knowing what he's doing. He set up the app identically on both computers.

Any idea what could be causing this?
