NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction

Help!
My kids were able to play games on the computer (16 bit
games). But, now when they try to play the games it
gives me the error...

16 BIT WINDOWS SUBSYSTEM
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
Choose close to terminate the application.

close ignore

I am using Windows XP Home.

Any input would be welcomed...
