CMD Error-Can't get to DOS window

Hello, I am a novice XP user

When I try to access an MS DOS Screen by typing "CMD" in the "OPEN" window,
the MS DOS screen appears along with an error message message window which
reads " 16 bit MS subsystem NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
CS:054d IP:0102 OP: ffff 83 3e 51". There is an "Ignore" and a "Cancel"
button. No matter which button is chosen, both windows close. I need to
access the MS dos window because I am having difficulty installing a Lynksys
wireless router.

Thanks

Type CMD.EXE

If that works, then your system has a CMD.COM file in the Windows or
Windows\System32 folder. If you find a file named CMD.COM, delete it. It's
most likely a Virus. Follow-up with a complete Virus and Malware checkup
(very much recommended).
