Error message: "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal transaction." Also the dialog is titled "16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem".

Is this the client version of Ventrilo? I've done some googling and found that some users has this error when using an older bundled version of Ventrilo. Are you using the latest version from here (http://www.ventrilo.com/dlprod.php?id=1)?

Not sure what you mean by "older bundled version". The site says that no previous versions are "allowed" to be used (I'm assuming they change the protocol or whatever each time so that it won't connect if you have a previous version, or else they somehow disable with rampant popups or something). As for the download link you just linked to their site.

I mean bundled as in the Ventrilo package came with another application, so could be an older version. It wasn't possible for me to link to a direct download, but clicking the button at the bottom of that page should give you direct access to the 3.0.5 download, so I guess that's the one you are using?

Can you please let me know the file attributes of command.com located in c:\Windows\System32 (size and file creation time). It could be that this file is corrupt. I would run "sfc /scannow" from the command prompt to check this, here's an article explaining how:
