ntldr missing

Hope someone out there can help me with this headache.

Got amd 2500 barton with 1gig ddr ram, asus deluxe motherboard and maxtor
120gig sata harddrive. Running XP home with SP2. Built it myself bout 9
months ago.

Screen froze few days ago so I had no option other than press reset. On boot
up got message NTLDR missing press cntrl+alt+delete.I tried booting from XP
disc and pressing R to repair. Get error message relating to ntfs.sys.
I never made a back up disc (yes I know!) so I did the web search and
checked out Microsofts forums/bulletins.
Every where tells me to press F8 to get into the menu which I can do. None
of the options will work for me,the pc just reboots.
Ive downloaded boot discs which contain boot ini and ntldr and the pc sees
them but wont do any thing with em.
I can get the files off the xp disc onto a floppy but I cant see any way of
copying them onto the duff pc.
In some desperation I just ordered another Maxtor 120 gig sata drive which I
will install and maybe be able to install XP onto that with the aim of being
able to access the duff hard drive...got files on there I will need.
I seem to have a pc that is totally inaccesible.

Would appreciate any help on this,I cant believe its impossible to revive.I
dont understand what happened in the first instance.
Microsoft talk about the MBR being excessively fragmented?

Cheers,

Tony

Someone who knows why more than I do suggest that you do not press "r"
This may look like you are reformating but you are not.

your best bet in this situation is to boot directly from
the windows xp cd and install XP on top of itself.

when it finishes loading, it will give you three
options. Choose to install XP. the next screen will ask
you if you would like to repair or install a fresh copy.
choose the repair option.

if this doesnt help then you might want to think about
downloading Hiren's Boot CD and using the NTFS Dos Boot
option so you can save your files to floppy.

keep me up to date with this and i will help you as much
as possible.

Thanks for all your help.

I`ve already tried to reinstall xp but end up at the same blue screen of
death the same as when I press r.

I am attempting to download Hirens at the mo and then I`ll try some of the
utilities.

Checked out Microsoft links and the creation of the boot floppy looks worth
a try. Looks a bit over my head but my next door neighbour is an IT boffin
and he owes me a favour.

I`ll let you know how I get on in a few days, need to install cdwriter onto
this old pc!

Regards,

Tony
