Ntldr error....help??

Upon returning home I found my desktop had restarted and displayed the ntldr
missing error, press ctrl, alt, del to restart. This just returns to the
error screen.

I have service pack 3. I have checked my boot sequence and it is correct as
far drives.

I have tried from start up disc- copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\ and recieve
"Access is denied" therefor i cannot copy the file. I also did the following
and upon reboot, right back to the ntldr missing error.

On the next screen, at the prompt, type in chkdsk /r {with a space
before the /r parameter} and press Enter. Let it run.
At the prompt again, type in "fixmbr" {without the quotes} and
press Enter.
At the prompt again, type in "fixboot" {without the quotes} and
press Enter.
Remove your XP CD and restart the computer.

I did check my dir thru the command prompt and the ntldr file is defiantly
missing.

Is there anything else I can do. I thought I read somewhere about just
putting the ntldr file on a disk and booting with that, didn't sound too
feasible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. This worked on the first try. I do have one question though.
The directions were kind of vague as to where the 3 copied files (BOOTIMG,
NTLDR, NTDETECT) should actually go. It was tough to figure out which files
were which as the directions referred to the files as" .ini" and they were
"VLC.bin" files. There was a file I did not copy BOOTCAT another VLC.bin
file. Should I have also copied this file? I just placed them in my main
C:\ file.

Now when I boot, I get a message that says: Invalid INI.file Boot from
C:\windows\. I does load fine, it just flashes that messages. Should the 3
files actually be in the windows folder or i386 folder or somewhere else to
eliminate the Invalid INI.file?

I can't understand what you're saying.

What's hard to understand here:

I think your "ini" error is about the "boot.ini" file.

Please try to explain it again, I'm confused.

Are you sure that your CD (or DVD) drive is D:?

Or

Are you sure there wasn't a typo when you entered that command?

Sorry for the confusion. The process worked, what I'm unsure of is where to
actually put the files so they are in the correct folder within my C: drive.
Right now I just stuck them in the C: drive itself on the first screen.
Should they actually go into the i386 folder.

As far as the .ini issue, the files on the disk show as VLC.bin files and
the instructions online and in the readme file on the disk refer to them as
..ini files. I know I got the right ones as I am getting back into windows
just fine. I belive on start up I am getting the Invalid INI.file boot from
C:\ windows because the 3 files I copied are not in the correct file, during
the boot up it finds them just in the C: drive and not in the windows
forlder, system folder or i386 folder where they would normally be. I hope
this is a little clearer.

Again, I don't understand.

What files are you trying to copy?
.... and why?
.... and what's that "VLC.bin" file?

To fix the "NTLDR is missing" error all you needed to do was
just copy the "ntldr" file from the "USB Flash Drive" to the
Windows root (C:\).

Write down the "ini" error message in full and post it here.

That is the correct location for the NTLDR file.

No. Let's make sure we are clear on what you have done first.

By "instructions online" are you referring to one of the 3 links ju.c
provided in the first reply? (Which one?)

By "Windows drive", ju.c meant the drive where the Windows operating system
is installed, not the Windows folder. (see below)

From your earlier message:

The 3 files that are supposed to be in the C-drive root folder are:
C:\ntldr
C:\ntdetect.com
C:\boot.ini

The 1st one does NOT have a file extension. The 2nd one has a dot com file
extension. The 3rd one has a dot ini file extension. You only needed the
ntldr file according to your original description of the problem.
(NTLDR = NT operating system LoaDeR)

To see those 3 files from Command Prompt:
C:\>dir /ah

Make sure they are there, and spelled correctly.

Are you still using the USB to boot the system, or getting in without it?

If you are able to get to your desktop, right-click My Computer and click
Properties. Click Advanced tab. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
Click the "Edit" button. (That opens the boot.ini file. Do not change
anything at this time.) In that file, Press Ctrl+A to Select All. Press
Ctrl+C to copy. Click upper right X to close that. Cancel the 2 dialog
windows. Paste what you copied into a reply here. (If boot.ini does not
appear there, report what, if anything happens.)

Also, in Control Panel, open Folder Options, click View tab.
In Advanced settings, make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected,
and remove the checkmark before "Hide protected operating system files".
(Read the Warning twice and click Yes.) Click OK. That will enable you to
see the super-hidden files in the root C:\ folder. (After everything is
working again, go back and re-checkmark protected operating system files.)

What exactly is the complete INI message you are getting?
