I was in the middle of reinstalling Windows XP on my ThinkPad when the CD
drive died. The harddrive just got formated and the Windows screen just came
on when everything came to a halt. I tried to boot up with the original XP
cd using an external CD drive (connected via USB) but it's not reading drive.
It doesn't even let me select boot from CD on start up. I've tried
selecting boot from CD from the boot select menu but still have the same
error.

Does anyone have any suggestion?

If you don't want to invest in a new cdrom drive and have a floppy drive
there's a set of floppys you can use to boot and
start the WinXP Install. Check here www.bootdisk.com

Your help is much appreciated.

I downloaded the bootup disks from microsoft and started the installation.
Everything was going well until i put the last boot up floppy (6/6) in. This
error message came up and i am back to square one. I tried multiple re-boot
but this can not get past this error. Even tried this hard drive in another
laptop without any issue.

A problem has been detected & windows has been shut down to prvent damage to
your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps.

Check for virusses on your computer, remove any newly installed hard drives
or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly
configured & terminated. Run chkdk /F to check for hard drive corruption on
restart you computer.

error
0x0000007B (0xF96AF63C, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, dx00000000)

Any idea if this can be repair?

Many thanks in advance.

Boot up with your Cd in the CD Rom and when you presented with Windows Setup
Options:
1- Install Windows
2- Repair existing copy
3- Quit
Select 2 by Pressing R on your keyboard, on the Command Prompt type:
C:\Windows>CD.. Hit [Enter..] on your Keyboard
on the new Prompt type this:
C:\>
copy X:\i386\ntldr c:\ where X is the Drive Letter for your CD-Rom
copy X:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\ " " "
Please type one at a time click/Hit [Enter..]
You may need to rebuild your Boot.ini type this on the Prompt:
C:\>Boot.ini click Enter and you will see your Boot.ini you can Edit it or
if was intact leave as is, the boot.ini will look like this, be aware this
for XP Home so if you have XP pro:
[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect
You will get Boot Indentifier: Enter this " Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"
Boot Loader: Enter this" /fastdetect"
When you finished type: reboot (I'm not sure if it is right you can Type ?
to get the list of commands and see if reboot is one) or Exit.
HTH.
Please let us know.

Nass, Thanks for the suggestion.

I am unable to boot from the CD-ROM as this is now not functioning. The
laptop does not recognize the CD drive (sometime I have access to the drive
and other times it does not register, can not see the drive in window
explorer). I’ve tried many things but nothing worked. As a last ditch I
tried to re-install XP hoping this might fix the CD problem but the CD drive
stopped working in the middle of installation. Now I have no operating
system and a CD drive that doesn’t work.

I’ve tried the boot using floppy disks (6) downloaded from Microsoft but get
an error on the final floppy that I can’t seem to get past.

Unfortunately, it sounds as if your laptop is failing in a number of ways.
Your time may best be spent on a new(er) one.

To determine if it's hardware or Windows, you might try using any of the
Linux boot CDs or install CDs. Try to install - you've recently formatted
the drive so you have no valuable data on it.

If you have the same kinds of problems, you can then be sure that they have
nothing to do with Windows.
