That is the initial boot loader used to start the loading of XP from
Hard disk. And either it has gone AWOL or the boot sequence has got
disturbed so that the machine is not any longer booting the right
partition. The second can happen if you have a dual boot with Win98 or
ME and switch the initial boot to try to boot the XP partition directly:
if you have done that use that system's Boot floppy and its FDISK
program to put the active partition back to being C:
Otherwise, if you have a regular XP CD (not an OEM restore one which
makes these repairs very difficult) Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard
Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead of Setup, take the immediate R for
Repair. Assume any password requested is blank, and TAB over.
If X is the CD drive's letter give
COPY X:\i386\ntldr C:\ntldr
(that is letter i number 386) and while about it
Fixboot
Fixmbr
just in case
