NTLDR: I/O error reading disk

I have a Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop without a CDROM. The operating
system is WRK Prof. It won't book up and I made 4 setup floppies by
putting in a W2K Cd in another computer and using the makeboot utility.

When I turn on the laptop with the first boot floppy the error message
I get is:

NTLDR: I/O error reading disk
Please insert another disk

That's a typical message you would get if the boot disk was formatted on a
dos system. What are you wanting to do?

I'm was hoping to boot the laptop to check for viruses etc before
resorting to reformatting.

What were you going to check with?

Is there a way to boot it? If I can just get it booted to back up the
data, I would be thrilled.

No idea since you haven't mentioned the problem as yet.

It hang up during the boot process. The windows 2000 professional
flashscreen comes up and then it goes blue and hangs. Same thing
happens in safe mode no matter what choice I make, w/networking, w/dos
prompt. I just want to boot it to 1.) back up my hard drive and then
2.) scan it to see if it is a virus.

Not sure if you're talking a blue-screen stop error or just no desktop.

If the former;

If the latter;
Check that explorer.exe is the default shell to start. Look at the Reg_Sz
string value of;
"Shell"="Explorer.exe"
found at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

The profile may also be corrupt so try creating a new account and logging on
with that or these may help you.
