NTFS problem chkdsk /f won't fix

When I run chkdsk from a CMD line, or from Norton utiilities, it reports
a problem with the disk and says to run chkdsk /f. Chkdsk runs on
startup afterward okay, but then when I run chkdsk from inside XP the
problem is still there. Looked through the knowledge base and couldn't
find anything that helps. What to do?

By the way, how do I make chkdsk stop long enough for me to read the
results when it runs on startup?

Try booting to xp cd,recovery, press enter for password, then at cmd screen
type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru,type:EXIT
You can/could type the same in xp cmd, however in R "repair" it'll run for
15 min or so,plus in recovery, you can view the text after it finishes...

Tried your suggestion. The /r took a whole lot more than 15 minutes.
Musta taken almost an hour. At one point the % complete went down from
74 to 50. Weird stuff. Said it fixed some stuff, but when I got into
XP, chkdsk still reported errors. Booted up in recovery console again
and ran a chkdsk and it said it found errors. So I ran the /r again and
this time it took even longer, but did not say if fixed any errors. I
also ran a deep diagnostic scan of the disk using the manufacturer's
(Maxtor) diagnostic, and the disk passed. I haven't done the chkdsk in
XP again yet. But it seems like something weird is going on. Think I'll
try removing spyware and a virus scan just for kicks (virus scan once
found a faulty file that was producing disk errors for me). And then
maybe I'll just ignore the problem since I haven't noticed any
performance problems.
