You cannot do that without using third-party software like PartitionMagic
www.powerquest.com

But the oppossite is possible: you can do a convert from fat32 to ntfs, but
not ntfs to fat32: therefore you need third-party tools like the one I
mentioned above.

or back up all your files and format

Can WinXP (NTFS) be converted to WinXP (FAT32) or to Win2K
(FAT32)??

If I'm reading what you're asking correctly, there are two
unrelated questions here.

First of all, regarding operating systems: Windows XP can *not be
converted to Windows 2000; that would be a downgrade and isn't
supported. The only way to get to Windows 2000 from WIndows XP is
by a format and clean installation.

If you want to know whether an NTFS drive can be converted to
FAT32, first of all note that you convert a *drive* from one file
system to another, not an operating system. No version of Windows
has ever had the ability to convert a drive from NTFS to FAT32;
that's also seen as a downgrade and isn't supported. However,
third-party tools like Partition Magic claim to be able to do
this. But be aware that I've seen reports both of success and
failure from people who have used Partition Magic in this way. If
you do try it, be sure to have a backup of anything you can't
afford to lose.

Why do you want to go from NTFS to FAT32?

I realize that I should not have asked to convert XP to Win2K since that
requires a clean install of Win2K..
I wish to have everything FAT32, since I still like to use Dos98se
programs on a floppy boot disk to be able massage all files on my
present Win2K computeer..
I was considering a new computer, which comes with XP or Win2K (NTFS)..

In my view you're making a serious mistake and you'd be better
off using NTFS and NTFS-aware utilies, not old Windows 98 ones,
but it's your choice.

You may able to tell the company you buy the computer from that
to you want it be FAT32, but if not, if it arrives NTFS, there's
no reason to try to convert it. It would be far easier just to
reinstall Windows, formatting to FAT32 when you do so.

You're welcome, Willard. I know very little about what Longhorn
will be, and regardless of what the test versions released so
far have in them, there's no guarantee that the released version
will be the same.
