ntfs and install

Win9x's 'winalign.exe' would have set 4k clusters. It's too late now, and no 4k means slow ntfs performance.

I have installed winXP again over my previous fat32 drive

when I installed I selected the current fat32 partition of about 80G and
then selected to convert to ntfs from installation as this was an option.

should I have deleted the partition and simply selected it again with ntfs
to format the HD without cluster problems.

have I avoided the cluster problem from fat32 properly or do I need to
re-install and delete all partitions
