I have one NTFS PC and one FAT32 PC, both XP Pro SP1,
both connected to the router. Both have firewalls. They
belong to the same workgroup.
Should they be able to access each other? Should they be
able to ping each other? I'd like to share files but
can't get access from one to the other.
Thanks.
They should be able to access and ping each other. The file system
that a computer uses is completely irrelevant in networking.
It's possible that the firewalls are blocking access. If you've
enabled XP's Internet Connection Firewall, disable it -- it's designed
for use on a direct modem connection to the Internet, and it blocks
file sharing by default. If you've enabled the Windows Firewall (new
in XP Service Pack 2) turn on the exception for file sharing. If you
have a third-party firewall, like ZoneAlarm or Norton Internet
Security, put the local area network in the trusted zone.
