NTDETECT Failed on startup

When I try to book into windows I get this error message.
I have tried to run windows repair from the CD-ROM
without success. This message appears before I can get a
chance to try and select last know good. I an running
windows 2000 server. If I don not have a copy of the
system state am I out of luck and must reinstall. Is
there any way to just copy this file into the proper
location. Any help GREATLY appreciated.
