NTBackup won't run on XP Pro

I've been using the NTBackup utility to backup my c: drive to my d: drive for about a year w/o any problem. Today I went thru my normal maintenance routine (ran error checking with no problems, then did a defrag with no problems) and clicked on the Backup Now button. The hour glass flashed for a second then nothing. No NTBackup welcome screen

I looked in the event log (application and system), but found no messages. I tried to run ntbackup.exe /? from the command prompt hoping to get help. Instead I get nothing. It just returns to the command prompt without doing anything

Obviously, something has changed on my system but NTBackup won't give many any messages (error or otherwise) as to why it won't run. I've even tried "expanding" it off the install CD and running SP1 again. Anyone have any ideas on how to debug this problem or what might be wrong?

Back One page a "Rocket J. Squirrel" said "Try
reinstalling it. Sometimes files become corrupted through
no fault of your own." which I tend to think applies here
as well.
