ntbackup hangs and does not complete

I have XP SP2 and when I manually or schedule a backup the utility hangs and
never completes. I have to hard boot my PC to stop the hung process.

Anyone have any ideas?

Have you done a complete disk check? Might be errors on the drive.
Tried it in Safe Mode?

Maybe this is a good thing. I had a hard drive crash, but made
complete backups using ntbackup. Thinking I was "safe" I thought I
would be able to recover my entire system and have it boot just like
before. Wrong! I had to reinstall everything, including several
download hours of MS updates. My files were recovered okay, but
that's it. Not sure if Vista has a good backup utility, but I doubt
it.

I use it for backup but I also make copies of partitions using Partition
Magic. The copies are kept on separate drives (I have 3 drives in the
main workstation). I keep the ntbackups on 2 external drives where the
partition backups are internal drives. That way if I have to recover a
bad drive, I can quickly copy the partition over to the new drive and
then use the latest backup copy to make sure everything is updated.

What about Safe Mode? Where does it hang? The same place each time?
Try excluding the folder where it hangs and see if it will complete.
