Maybe this is a good thing. I had a hard drive crash, but made
complete backups using ntbackup. Thinking I was "safe" I thought I
would be able to recover my entire system and have it boot just like
before. Wrong! I had to reinstall everything, including several
download hours of MS updates. My files were recovered okay, but
that's it. Not sure if Vista has a good backup utility, but I doubt
it.
I use it for backup but I also make copies of partitions using Partition
Magic. The copies are kept on separate drives (I have 3 drives in the
main workstation). I keep the ntbackups on 2 external drives where the
partition backups are internal drives. That way if I have to recover a
bad drive, I can quickly copy the partition over to the new drive and
then use the latest backup copy to make sure everything is updated.
