chkdsk "File verification completed" hang on boot

Windows XP hangs on reboot when check disk is run. Only boots if I
skip chkdsk. First phase runs to 100% complete and then it hangs. I've
tried scheduling chkdsk manually (as if this would make any difference)
as well as rebooting and letting it try again many times. After the
hang I have to do a hard reboot.

Ideas?

option to get version information.)

Nope, you have the latest version. Chkdsk doesn' provide much
information - that's one of it's problems. Look in event viewer for any
messages. Chkdsk will make an entry there for some things - I think
it's under winlogon as the source but I don't remember for sure.

Run CHKDSK /F as the message indicated. It can't do what you didn't tell
it to do.

Do CHKDSK /? for all commands parameters. Be mindfull the are different
sets of parameters available for CHKDSK from Windows vs. Recovery
Console, though.

Don't confuse NT's CHKDSK with DOS's CHKDSK. CHKDSK v5 is current for NT
v5.1 (which XP actually is).

Could it be better? Heck yeah, IMO, but if you know how to use what it
can do it basically does it like it's supposed to.

are not a cause for concern. The fact that it took 4 hrs is troubling
though. Make sure you always have a full and complete backup. To be
sure you might want to download a drive diagnostic utility from the
drive manufacturer's web site and run that. Usually it will create a
bootable floppy

are not a cause for concern.

I've read that before but I know from experience that cleaning up the
associated unused security descriptors has fixed file/folder permission
issues for normal users on several occaisions.

The fact that it took 4 hrs is troubling
though.

Yes, but it could be due to the disk being nearly full.

Make sure you always have a full and complete backup. To be
sure you might want to download a drive diagnostic utility from the
drive manufacturer's web site and run that. Usually it will create a
bootable floppy

Or a bootable CD, which I prefer since they boot much faster than floppies.

I'd also take measures to free up a lot of space on that drive and do a
defrag after the disk test.
