For no apparent reason, I no longer have the ability to
perform ASR and system state backups using NTBACKUP in
XPPro. The error returned is "Error returned while
creating the volume shadow copy:80042301 Aborting Backup.
The operation did not successfully complete."
Just for the record, I have tried backing up to my local
NTFS partitions on IDE drives and NTFS partitions on my
Firewire drive. There is plenty of space on the
partitions. I have a P4, 2.6Mhz, 512MB RAM.
Additionally, the MS Software Shadow Copy Provider and
COM+ System Application services stubbornly refuse to
start--returning error 1067 "The process terminated
unexpectedly" Both services are in the manual start-up
mode.
I tried doing an sfc /scannow and a number of system files
were restored to their previous state but this did not
help. A verbose chkdsk on all partitions found no errors.
My own belief is that one of the recent security updates
did me in.
Event logs show frequent com+ event 4689 errors: The run-
time environment has detected an inconsistency in its
internal state. This indicates a potential instability in
the process that could be caused by the custom components
running in the COM+ application, the components they make
use of, or other factors. Error in

is being initially created then no further action is

The serious nature of this error has caused the process to
terminate.
Error Code = 0x8000ffff : Catastrophic failure
COM+ Services Internals Information:
I know of no other symptom of this besides the ntbackup.
All of my other applications are running fine. I run
Norton Antivirus with live update daily and real time
protection at all times. I run Zone Alarm at all times. I
run spybot s&d and spywareblaster regularly. I tried doing
a system restore back to prior to the last round of
security updates--didn't help.
Tried a tip at the JSI website» How do I clean up a
damaged COM+ catalog in Windows 2000?
01. Renamed %SystemRoot%\System32\Clbcatq.dll to %
SystemRoot%\System32\~Clbcatq.dll, making sure that you
include the tilde (~).
02. Shutdown and restart your computer.
03. Delete the COM3 sub-key from the registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft.
04. Open a CMD.EXE prompt.
05. Type pushd %SystemRoot% and press Enter.
06. Type rd /s /q Registration and press Enter.
07. Type popd and press Enter.
08. Type exit and press Enter.
09. Use Notepad to remove Hide from the COM= line in %
SystemRoot%\Inf\Sysoc.inf.
10. Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add/Remove
Programs / Add/Remove Windows Components.
11. Press Next and reinstall COM+.
This didn't help either. What do I have to do to get back
the functionality of NTBACKUP?
