NT On-Acess Scanner service problems

I recently was prompted by my computer to download a
windows update. Ever since I have had problems restarting
my computer. It runs for several minutes before finally
displaying the following message:

NT On-Acess Scanner service encountered a problem ...

Does any one know how to fix this? I have sent several
error reports to microsoft but have never received a
response.
